Zippo: Behind the Scenes

Get an inside look at the Zippo lighter manufacturing process. All standard windproof lighters start from a solid brass roll. The rolls are cut and stamped into the base and lid shapes. From there, the base and lid are separated and transported to welding. Hinges are then welded onto the base and lid creating the lighter case. The cases then travel to have the desired finish applied. After the finish dries the cases can then be engraved, color imaged, or decorated in various other ways. Meanwhile, the lighter inserts are stamped from rolls of steel. Each insert is fitted with a flint wheel, flint, spring, cam, wick, rayon, and felt pad. After the insert is finished, it can be fitted in the lighter case. Finally, the finished lighter is carefully inspected, boxed, and shipped around the world.
