Officials at Zippo Manufacturing Co. announced Thursday there will no longer be a Zippo/Case International Swap Meet; however, the company is looking to develop a new event for both collectors and the local community.

The announcement was made in a press release issued by Greg Booth, president and chief executive officer of Zippo and chairman of the board at W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co.7 i v4 _* f8 m6 ]3 g' _- v" ~) f
9 r I+ Z, n' G; `: V" ^“We won’t have a swap meet, per se, as far as the name goes,” said Kathleen Jones, retail marketing manager at Zippo. “In 2009, Zippo will have a bigger and better event. We want to redefine that event for employees and collectors.”

7 C$ G' T+ Q$ _* |( g; dThe next swap meet was to be held in 2008. But not all is lost for Case enthusiasts as Case will host an inaugural Case Collectors Appreciation Weekend next summer, “designed to pay tribute to the thousands of enthusiasts who collect Case knives,” said Tom Arrowsmith, Case president and chief executive officer.

( E9 K( j5 B* HMany of the same activities normally associated with past swap meets are planned for the new two-day Case-themed event.

Booth said this opportunity includes expanding what the company offers collectors.

* K% Q- }- e" dJones said the swap meet has been held biennially since 1998 and reiterated that officials thought now was a good time to change and do what they can to meet the needs of the collectors.; j# H! r3 r5 S8 Q+ G. {! f

“They are so important to us,” Jones said. “We are looking to do something to enhance it (the event). We don’t know what that is right now. We have been brainstorming.”+ W- t% R" X% x/ Y9 ^
% F0 I" Z: n0 a& P2 vNow seemed to be the perfect time for a change after Zippo’s 75th anniversary celebration earlier this year.

In a letter to employees released on Thursday, Booth said “I reflect back on the year that included a phenomenal celebration last summer. That event and events like the swap meet are successful only because of you.”5 B0 _. B) ?7 X* u4 \& \
8 { B; E5 Q0 j& f$ [; c3 m“It’s all good news for us,” Jones said, adding that for the past few swap meets, officials have added events, but now it’s time for a change.9 U$ ]7 H' N' }# w, W! z& ~* U* ~

“We want to provide a wonderful event for the community and the collecting community ... do what is right for them.”

“It’s their event. We want them to be involved,” she said.

She noted there’s been an upswing in younger collectors and they want them to feel more “comfortable in the collecting world.”
